覚え方
matrix はラテン語 mātrīx（子孫を産む雌、生成の源）から来た語で、māter（母・起源）+ -ix（〜するものを表す形）と分けられる。母が生命を生み出すことから、「何かを生み出す母体・源」という意味になり、さらに物事を組み立てる基盤や行列を指すようになった。
maternal（母の）・maternity（母性）も māter と同じ仲間。matr を見たら「母・生み出す土台」と覚えると、matrix の「母体・原型」と、数学で数値を配置する「行列」の両方を結びつけやすい。複数形 matrices は「マトリシーズ」に近い。
