geo-（地球・大地）+ -logy（学問分野を表す語尾）で「大地の学問」。岩石や地層を扱うので日本語では「地質学」、その土地の性質そのものを指して「地質」とも訳す。
-logy は *leǵ-（集める）に遡る語尾。同じ元から collect（集める）・select（選ぶ）・lecture・legend が出ている。
