ラテン語 frāctūra（破損・裂け目） から来た語で、奥には *bʰreg-（壊す・砕く）。割れて生じた裂け目そのものを指す。
医学では骨折で、a bone fracture、fracture one's arm（腕を折る）。地質では岩の割れ目、比喩では組織や関係の亀裂（a fracture in the party＝党内の分裂）。どれも「一体だったものに走った割れ」で、break より具体的な破断面を思わせる語である。
同族は fraction（断片・分数）・fragment（かけら）・fragile（壊れやすい）・fractal（フラクタル）。frac-／frag- は「壊れる」でまとめられる。
