refractionの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 refrāctiō = refringō（打ち破る・砕く）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞語尾）。refringō はさらに re-（後ろへ）+ frangō（壊す・砕く） に分かれる。
光が別の物質に入るときに進路が折れ曲がる現象が refraction（屈折）で、進む線が折られるという捉え方。frangō の *bʰreg-（壊す・砕く）は break（壊す）・fragment（かけら）・fragile（壊れやすい）・fracture（骨折）と同族で、frag・fract の形が「砕く」を担う。
