覚え方
古英語 brecan（壊す・割る）からの break の -ing 形。「割って中身を外へ出す」が芯のイメージ。
報道の breaking news は、まさに今破れ出てきた知らせ＝速報。ほかに breaking point（限界点）、breaking and entering（不法侵入）など、「壊れる瞬間」を指す言い回しが多い。
補足: ダンスのブレイクダンスは英語では breaking と呼ぶのが正式。活用は break–broke–broken。
