覚え方
tort はラテン語 torqueō（ねじる・回す）。ure が行為とその結果をひとまとめにし、torture は「ねじるように苦しめること」、すなわち「拷問・激しい苦痛」、動詞で「拷問する・苦しめる」になる。
tort を見たら「ねじれて苦しい」と読むのがコツで、distort（ねじって歪める）にも同じ感覚が通う。torture chamber は「拷問室」。実際の拷問に限らず、耐えがたいつらさを大げさに言うときにも使える語である。
