ラテン語 tortūra（ねじり行為・拷問）は、回す・ねじるを表す *terkʷ- と関係する。身体をねじり、苦痛を与える行為というイメージから、torture は「ねじるように苦しめること」を表すようになった。
そこから動詞では「拷問する」、名詞では「拷問・激しい苦痛」を意味する。tort を見たら「ねじれて苦しい」と覚えるとよく、torturous（苦痛を与える）や torture chamber（拷問室）にも同じ連想が使える。
