覚え方
英語 ray（光線）はラテン語 rādius（棒・車輪の輻）に由来する語。車輪の中心から放射状に伸びる棒、輻(や)のイメージが原義。
太陽などから四方に放射状に伸びる棒のようなもの、というイメージから「光線」を意味するようになった。さらに比喩的に、暗闇の中の一筋の光として「光明」という意味でも使われる。
同じ rādius の仲間には radius(半径)・radiant(光り輝く)がある。radi/ray を見たら「放射状に伸びる」と覚えるとよい。
