inter(間に)+pol(磨く)。ラテン語 interpolō は、文章のあいだに手を入れて繕うこと、つまり語句を差し込んで手を加えることだった。英語の第一の意味は今も「(文中に語句を)挿入する」で、本来なかったものを紛れ込ませる含みを伴う。an interpolated passage(後世の挿入部分)。
数学やデータ処理では価値中立の術語になり、既知の点のあいだを埋めて値を推定する「補間する」。外へ延ばす extrapolate(外挿)と対にして覚えるとよい。
