ラテン語 poliō（磨く） の過去分詞 polītus（磨き上げられた） から。表面を擦って滑らかにする、が原義。

その「磨いてある」が態度に移り、角の取れた振る舞い＝「礼儀正しい」になった。荒々しさを削り落とし、相手に不快感を与えないよう整えた状態が polite。

同じ流れの polish（磨く・洗練する）と並べると見通しがよい。名詞は politeness、副詞は politely。polite を見たら「態度を磨いてある」と読む。
