civilの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 cīvīlis（市民の・公共の・礼儀正しい）= cīvis（市民・臣民）+ -īlis（名詞との関係を示す形容詞語尾）。市民社会や公共生活に関わるものを指したことから、「市民の」「民間の」、さらに公共の場で求められる「礼儀正しい」へ意味が広がった。
