non-（〜でない）+ linear（直線的な・線状の）。linear は line（線）の形容詞で、「一本の線に沿ってまっすぐ」であることを表す。
それを打ち消した nonlinear は「直線的でない」。数学では入力と出力が比例せず、グラフが直線にならない関係を指し（nonlinear equation 非線形方程式）、比喩では「話が一直線に進まない」ときにも使う。
nonstop・nonprofit と同じで、non- は後ろの語をまるごと否定するだけである。難しく見える専門語でも、linear（直線的）さえ分かれば意味は取れる。
