覚え方
ラテン語 polāris（極の）= polus（軸の端・天空）+ -āris（〜に関する）。英語としても pole（極）+ -ar と読める。
地球の軸の端＝南極・北極についていう「極地の」（polar bear ホッキョクグマ、polar ice 極氷）と、正反対の二つの端についていう「両極性の」（polar opposites 正反対のもの同士）の二本立て。どちらも 「軸の端＝いちばん端っこ」 という一つのイメージから出ている。
補足: 物理・化学では「極性のある」（polar molecule 極性分子）。北極星 Polaris も「極の星」で、同じ polāris の系統。
