opposite はラテン語 oppōnō（対置する・反対する）の過去分詞 oppositus から来た語。ob-（〜に向かって・〜に対して）+ pōnō（置く）で、「何かに向かい合う位置に置く」が原義である。
向かい合わせに置かれたものは、互いに反対側にある。そこから opposite は「反対側の」「正反対の」という意味になった。opposite を見たら「向かいに置かれたもの」とイメージすると、opposite side（反対側）や opposite opinion（反対意見）も覚えやすい。
