古英語では ne を動詞の前に置いて否定したが、その ne が後ろの語と溶け合って一語になったものが今の否定語群である。ne + ǣfre → never、ne + ān → none、ne + ā wiht → naught・nought というふうにたどれ、not は naught の弱まった形とされる。nary（ne + ever a）や nowise（決して〜ない）のような古風な語にも同じ縮約が残っている。
現代語で数を稼ぐのは接頭辞の non で、ほぼ何にでも付いて「〜でない」を作る（nonessential・nonentity・nonporous・nonunion・nonvolatile・nonperformance・nonsteroidal）。non- は「その分類に入らない」という事実の否定なので、価値判断を含む un- や in- より中立に響く。noncommittal（言質を与えない）、notwithstanding（それに妨げられず→にもかかわらず）のように、意味が固まって独立した語も多く、n で始まる語を見たら「打ち消されているのは後半」と読むのが基本になる。
