覚え方
what（何）+ not（〜でない）。「何であれ、そうでないものも」という言い回しから、「その他もろもろ」を表す名詞になった。and whatnot（〜など）が典型。
what の頭は疑問を表す *kʷ- で、who・why・where と同じ。not は *h₂ey-（一生・ずっと）と *wekti-（物）を含む形が縮まった語で、「ずっと・物が（ない）」が元の姿。
小物を載せる飾り棚を whatnot と呼ぶ用法もある。
