not（…ない）+ withstand（耐え抜く）+ -ing。中英語 notwithstandinge が元の形で、「それが立ちはだかって妨げることなく」という言い回しだった。
つまり「〜が抵抗しても押し切って」→「〜にもかかわらず」。前置詞としても接続詞としても使え、Notwithstanding the rain, the match went on.（雨にもかかわらず試合は続いた）のように堅い文書で見かける。名詞の後ろに置く用法（the rain notwithstanding）もある。
withstand の stand は *steh₂-（立つ）。「立ちはだかるものを not で打ち消す」と読めば、長い綴りも三つの部品に分けて覚えられる。
