古英語 stille（静かな・穏やかな）は、動きも音も止まった状態を表した。そこから「動かずにその状態が続く」という感覚が生まれ、still は「静かな・動かない」だけでなく、「まだその状態で」として「まだ」、さらに「それでも」も表すようになった。
stillness（静けさ）や stand still（じっと立つ）と一緒に覚えるとよい。動かない状態が続く＝stillと考えれば、「静かな」と「まだ」のつながりが見えやすい。
