somewhat は some（いくつかの・ある程度の）+ what（何・どれを問う語）の組み合わせである。some の背後には「一つ・共に」を表す *sem-、what の背後には疑問詞の基礎となる *kʷ- がある。
「何かある程度のもの」というぼんやりした捉え方から、somewhat は「やや・少し・いくらか」という弱めた程度を表す副詞になった。somewhat は「何かが、ある程度」と分解すると、「完全にそうだ」と断定しない控えめな表現として覚えられる。
