nondescriptの語源と覚え方

non-（〜でない）+ descript（書き記された）。descript の側はラテン語 dēscrīptus（写された・記された）= dēscrībō（書き写す・描き出す）+ -tus（過去分詞をつくる） に由来し、「書きとめられたもの」を指す。
つまり nondescript は「書き記されていない」＝「これといって書きとめるべき特徴がない」。分類表に載せようがないほど平凡だ、という感覚から「特徴のない・ぱっとしない」になった。a nondescript building（何の変哲もない建物）のように使う。
奥にあるのは *(s)kreybʰ-（引っかく・刻む）で、文字を刻むイメージが describe・description・script と共通する。scrib / script は「書く」と読み、頭の non- で丸ごと打ち消すと覚えるとよい。
