覚え方
ラテン語 ōrdinārius（秩序に関連する・役職者としての）= ōrdō（体系的な配列・社会的地位）+ -ārius（名詞や数詞から形容詞を作る語尾）。決められた配列や制度に属するもの、つまり特別に外れたものではないものという意味から、「通常の・標準的な」になった。
ordinary は「平凡で価値がない」というより、まず 秩序や標準の枠内にあるという語。order と結び付けて、「order に従う標準的なもの」と覚えると、ordinary・ordinarily の意味をつかみやすい。
