ラテン語 dēbeō(負う・借りている)= dē-(離れて)+ habeō(持つ)。「本来は他人のものを自分が持っている」=「借りている」が原義で、その形 dēbentur から debenture が生まれた。
意味は「借りがあることを証する書面」、つまり社債・債務証書。会社が「これだけ負っています」と紙にして出すもの、と考えると具体的につかめる。
debt(借金)・debit(借方)・due(期限が来た=負っている)と同じ一族。deb- を見たら「負っている」と読むのがコツ。
