rational は、ラテン語 ratiōnālis（理性に関する・論理的な・合理的な）に由来する。これは ratiō（理由・計算・合理的な方法）+ -ālis（名詞から「〜に関する」を作る要素） という組み立てで、「理由や計算に関する」が原義である。
そこから、感情や思いつきではなく、理由を考えて判断する「理性的な・合理的な」という意味になった。ratiō の背景にある h₂reh₁-（考える・整理する） を意識すると、頭の中で材料を整理して筋道を立てるイメージで覚えられる。
ratio（比率）・reason（理由）・rationalize（合理化する）も同じ「理由・計算」の仲間。rat- / ration- を見たら、理由を計算して整理すると読むと、rational の意味につながりやすい。
