ラテン語 ratiō（理性・計算・方法） に由来する reason の流れをくむ語。ratiō は reor（考える・判断する） の分詞 ratus（判断された・確定した） に -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞） が付いた形で、もとは「数え上げて筋道を立てること」。
その背景には *h₂reh₁-（考える・整える） があり、「勘定を合わせる」＝「理屈を合わせる」という一本の線でつながっている。英語の reasoning は「筋道を立てて考える過程」、つまり推論そのものを指す。
同じ源から ratio（比）・rational（合理的な）・rate（割合）が出ている。deductive reasoning（演繹的推論）、circular reasoning（循環論法）のように、思考の型を語るときの基本語。
