覚え方
ラテン語 lūcidus（明るい・澄んだ）＝ lūceō（光る・夜が明ける）+ -idus（〜しがちだという形容詞をつくる）。「光を放っている・透き通っている」が原義。
英語では物の明るさより、頭や文章の「曇りのなさ」に使うのが中心。a lucid explanation（すっきり分かる説明）、lucid intervals（意識がはっきりしている時間帯）のように、混濁の反対を表す。
lūceō は *lewk-（明るい／輝く／見る）、-idus は *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす） に連なる。同じ *lewk- の仲間に translucent（半透明の）・elucidate（解き明かす）があり、luc を見たら「光」と読むのがコツ。
