ラテン語 pēnicillum（画筆・小筆）= pēniculus（刷毛・海綿）+ -illus（小さいものを表す指小の要素）。もとは絵や写本を書くための細い筆のことだった。
英語でも当初は細い画筆を指し、黒鉛の芯を木で挟んだ今の筆記具に意味が移ったのは後のこと。それでも「細い先で線を引く道具」という核は変わっていない。a pencil sharpener（鉛筆削り）、in pencil（鉛筆書きで）、pencil in a meeting（仮の予定として書き入れる＝あとで消せる鉛筆書きから）のように使う。英国式では pencilled / pencilling と l を重ねる。
同じ流れから生まれた語に penicillin（ペニシリン）がある。これは筆先のように房状に伸びるカビの形から名づけられたもので、「細い筆」という原義が薬の名にまで残っている。
