覚え方
英語 modal は、ラテン語 modālis（様態の・仕方の）に由来する語で、これは「尺度・方法」を意味する modus に、名詞から関係を表す形容詞を作る -ālis が付いてできた語。modus は印欧祖語 *med-（測る、助言する、治療する）にさかのぼる。
「物事のやり方・様式に関する」という原義から、文法では話し手の判断（可能性・必要性・義務など）の様式を表す助動詞（can, may, must など）を modal（法性を表す・可能性のある）と呼ぶようになった。
modus の仲間には mode（様式・方法）・moderate（適度に測られた→穏健な）がある。mod を見たら「測る・様式」と読むのがコツ。
