覚え方
英語 living は、live（生きる・住む）に現在分詞を作る -ing が付いた語。古英語ではすでに lifiġende（生きている）という形が使われており、live は印欧祖語 *leyp-（粘りつく・脂）にさかのぼるとされる。
現在分詞としての「生きている」という意味から、形容詞 living は「現存の・生きている」を、名詞では「生計・暮らし」（a living を得る＝生計を立てる）という意味にも広がった。
*leyp- の仲間には life（生命）・leave（残す・去る）がある。live/liv を見たら「生きる」と読み、life・living・alive をひとまとめに覚えるとよい。
