animate（生気を与える・動かす）+ -ion（行為・結果・状態）。背後にラテン語 animātiō（生命を与えること）= animō（息を吹き込む・生気を与える）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞をつくる） があり、*h₂enh₁-（息をする）に遡る。
「息を吹き込んで生きているようにすること」が原義。止まった絵に命を与える映像技法も、人や場の「活気」（full of animation＝生き生きとして）も同じ語で表せるのはこのため。
同族に animal（息をするもの）・unanimous（心を一つにした＝満場一致の）・magnanimous（度量の大きい）。anim を見たら「息・心」。
