覚え方
be（ある・である）+ -ness（〜である状態） で「存在していること」。個々の存在物ではなく「存在しているという性質」のほうを言い分けるための、哲学寄りの語。ドイツ語 Seiendheit の訳語として作られた面もある。
be の背景には *bʰuH-（なる・生じる）と *h₁es-（ある・いる）という二つの流れがあり、be・been は前者、is・am は後者。一つの動詞に見えて、もとは別々の語が合体している。
-ness は状態や性質の名詞をつくる（kindness 親切、darkness 暗さ）。being（存在）より抽象度が高く、日常会話ではまず使わない。
