覚え方
fit（ふさわしい・健康な）+ -ness（〜である状態・性質） で「適していること」。fit の二つの意味がそのまま名詞に受け継がれている。
一つは「適性・ふさわしさ」で、fitness for the job（その職への適性）、fitness for purpose（用途への適合）。もう一つが今よく使われる「体調のよさ・体力」で、physical fitness（体力）、fitness center（フィットネスクラブ）。
生物学では fitness を「適応度」と訳し、その環境でどれだけ子孫を残せるかを指す。survival of the fittest（適者生存）の fittest はこの意味で、「強い者」ではなく「環境に合った者」が生き残るという趣旨である。
