directlyの語源と覚え方
覚え方
direct（まっすぐな・回り道のない）+ -ly（〜に）。芯は *h₃reǵ-（まっすぐにする／正す） で、「線をまっすぐ引く」というイメージが全体を貫いている。
そこから二つの意味が出る。空間・関係の「じかに」（deal directly with the maker＝製造元と直に取引する）と、時間の「ただちに」（I'll be there directly.）。寄り道をしないという一点で、この二つは同じ絵である。
補足: 英国の口語では「〜するとすぐに」という接続詞的な用法もある（Directly he arrived, ...）。correct・rectangle・regular も同じ「まっすぐ」の系列。
