覚え方
speculation は speculate（推測する・思索する）+ -ion（行為・結果・状態を表す名詞語尾）。speculate のもとには *speḱ-（視線を向けて観察する）があり、まず対象をじっと見ることから、「見えない部分まで考えて判断する」という意味へ発展した。
確かな証拠を直接見るのではなく、観察できる事実から先を思い描くため、「推測・憶測・思惟」を表す。金融の speculation なら、将来の値動きを予想して行う投機という意味になる。
同じ *speḱ- をもつ inspect（詳しく調べる）・spectator（観察者）・perspective（見通し）などと関連づけるとよい。spec- / spect- は「見る」、そこから「考えて見通す」と覚えると speculation の意味につながる。
