覚え方
theory は、後期ラテン語 theōria「観察、考察、理論」を経た語で、「理論、学説」を意味する。いくつもの事実や現象を、つながりのある説明として捉えることが中心だ。見たことを並べるだけでなく、なぜそうなるのかを考えて一つの説明にまとめる、という流れが手がかりになる。
a scientific theory は、観察や証拠に基づいて現象を説明する科学理論。日常会話の I have a theory about that. なら「それについて私なりの考えがある」で、まだ確かめていない推測の場合もある。in theory は「理論上は」で、実際にどうなるかとは分けて述べる表現だ。専門的な理論と日常の推測を、同じ確かさのものとして読まないことが使い分けのコツになる。
