覚え方
ラテン語 explānātiō（説明）から。動詞 explānō は ex-（すっかり）+ plānus（平らな・明白な） で、そこに動作や結果を表す -tiō が付いて名詞になった。「でこぼこをならして平らにすること」が説明の原義。
動詞 explain には i があるのに、名詞は explanation と i が消える。名詞側にはラテン語の plānus の形がそのまま残っているため。
-tiō から来た -ation は information・invitation・examination にも並ぶ。an explanation for the delay のように前置詞を伴って使う。
