覚え方
ラテン語 iūstificātiō（正当化・義認）＝ iūstificō（正当化する・弁護する）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞を作る）。対格形 iūstificātiōnem が英語の形のもとで、「正しいと示す行為」から「正当とする理由・弁明」になった。
日常では「言い訳」に近い響きを持つことも多い。There is no justification for such delays.（この遅れに弁明の余地はない）、in justification of ...（〜の弁護として）のように、行為の正しさを支える理由を指す。
印刷やワープロの「両端揃え」も justification と呼ぶ。「あるべき正しい位置にきちんと収める」という感覚で、法律用語の側とつながっている。
