justifyの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 iūstificō（正当化する・義とみなす）は、iūstus（公正な・正しい）+ -ficō（〜にする・作る） という構成。つまり「正しいものにする、正しいと認める」が原義で、英語 justify の「正当化する・理由を説明する」へつながった。文章の行を左右にそろえる意味も、配置を正しく整えるイメージから理解できる。
iūstus は h₂yew-（正しく配置される・公平原則で支配される） と結びつき、justice（正義）や just（正しい）と同じ連想を呼ぶ。justify を見たら、just＝正しい、-ify＝その状態にする と分け、「正しいと説明できる状態にする」と覚えるとよい。
