覚え方
ラテン語 excūsō（言い訳をする・免除する）= ex-（外へ・離れて）+ causā（理由・原因）+ -ō（動詞を作る語尾）。ある行為を問題や非難の外へ置くために理由を示す、という発想から、「言い訳をする」「過ちや遅延を正当化する」「免除する」へ意味が広がった。
ex- は責任や非難から外へ、causā は理由と覚えると、excuse の中心がつかみやすい。make an excuse は「言い訳をする」、excuse me は「私を責めの範囲から外してください」という丁寧な謝罪・呼びかけとして理解できる。
