explainの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 explānō（説明する）= ex-（すっかり）+ plānus（平らな・明白な）。でこぼこの地面をならして平らにするように、込み入った話をならして見通しよくすることが原義。
そこから「分かるように述べる」となった。explain A to B の形をとり、相手を直接目的語にして explain me とは言わないのが tell との違い。
plānus は plain（平らな・分かりやすい）・plane（平面）・plan（平面図→計画）にも残っていて、plan を立てるのも元は「平らな図を描く」こと。
