古フランス語 plaidier（嘆願する・法廷で争う）= placitum（決定・訴え）+ -āre（動詞を作る語尾）。「訴えとして述べ立て、相手に受け入れさせようとする」が原義。
法廷では「弁論する・答弁する」、日常では「切に願う」。plead guilty / not guilty（有罪・無罪を主張する）、plead with someone to do ~（人に〜してくれと懇願する）が代表的な形で、名詞 plea と対になる。
活用は plead / pleaded / pleaded が標準だが、アメリカでは pled も広く使われる。法律文書では pleading（訴答書面・弁論）という名詞も頻出する。
