ラテン語 basis（土台・基礎）から。奥にあるのは *gʷeh₂-（歩む・行く・立つ）／*gʷem-（来る・歩む）で、「足で踏んで立つところ」が原義。
base（土台）・basic（基本的な）・basement（地階）と同じ一族の中で、basis は抽象的な「よりどころ・根拠」を担当する。on the basis of（〜に基づいて）・on a daily basis（日単位で）が定番の形。
補足: 複数形は bases。base の複数形 bases と綴りが同じなので、文脈で見分ける。
