corner（角）+ stone（石）。corner はラテン語 cornu（角）から、stone は古英語 stān（石）で、建物の角に最初に据える石を指した。
その石が位置と高さの基準になるため、「物事の土台・要」という比喩へ広がった。the cornerstone of democracy（民主主義の礎）のように使い、式典で石を置くのが lay the cornerstone。
cornu は *ḱerh₂-（頭・角）にさかのぼり、horn（角）・unicorn（一角獣）と同じ系統。stān は *steyh₂-（硬くなる）にさかのぼる。
