覚え方
ラテン語 fundātiō（創設・設立）= fundō（創設する・定める）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞を作る）。「土台を据えて成り立たせること」が原義で、そこから支える底の部分と設立された組織の両方を指すようになった。
建物では「基礎」、議論では「根拠」（without foundation＝根拠がない）、組織では「財団」。訳語は離れて見えるが、いずれも上に載るものを下から成り立たせるものという一点でつながる。化粧品のファンデーションも「他を載せる下地」である。
動詞は found（設立する）で、活用は found - founded - founded。find の過去形 found とは別語なので注意したい。found を見たら「据える・設立する」と読み、founder（創設者）・well-founded（根拠の確かな）と合わせて覚える。
