ラテン語 initiātiō = initiō(始める)+ -tiō(行為を表す名詞を作る)。initiō は initium(始まり・入口)から作られた動詞で、その initium は **「中へ」の en- と「行く」の h₁ey- が合わさった語、つまり「中へ入ること」。
「入っていくこと」が芯にあるので、単なる開始だけでなく、組織や結社への「加入儀礼」も initiation と言う。
同じ initium から initial(最初の・頭文字)・initiative(先手・主導権)が出る。*h₁ey-(行く)は exit・transit・issue とも共通する。
