覚え方

ラテン語 prīncipium（始まり・基礎）は、prīnceps（第一の・首長＝prīmus（最初の）+ -ceps（〜を捕らえる者））に、抽象名詞を作る -ium が付いた語で、「最初に位置するもの＝始まり・基礎」が原義。

「物事の始まり・土台となるもの」というイメージから、英語 principle は「物事の基礎となる規則・法則」「信条」を意味するようになった。

同じ prīnceps を土台とする語に principal（別の語尾が付いた形、主要な・校長）があり、principle と principal はスペルも語源も近い双子のような語。-le で終われば「原理」の principle、-al なら「主要な」の principalと語尾で区別すると覚えやすい。
