prime(第一の)+ -al(〜に関する)。ラテン語 prīmus(最初の・第一の)に遡る形容詞で、「最初の・根源的な」を表す。
理性より前にある、本能のレベルのものを指すのによく使われる。primal instinct(原初の本能)・a primal scream(原始的な叫び)・primal fear(根源的な恐怖)のように用いる。
prīmus の仲間は prime・primary・primitive・premier、そして prince(第一の地位を取る者)。「いちばん底にある最初の層」が primal である。
