英語 behalf は be-（周りに・すっかり）＋ half（半分）からなる語で、be- は西ゲルマン祖語 *bi-（周りに）にさかのぼる。もとは古英語で bī healfe（〜の半分のそばに）という言い回しだった。
「人の側（半分）に寄り添う」という原義から、「その人の立場に立つ・その人のために行動する」という意味に発展し、on behalf of（〜を代表して、〜のために）という定型表現で使われるようになった。
half（半分）は「一方の側」というイメージを持つ語。behalf は「相手の側（半分）に回って代わりに動く」と覚えると、on behalf of の意味も自然に浮かぶ。
