覚え方
ラテン語 per centum（百につき） から来た percent に、-age（状態や量を表す名詞を作る） を付けた形。「百を基準にして表した割合」である。
使い分けが要点で、percent は数字に直付けする単位（30 percent of students）、percentage は数字を伴わない「割合」そのもの（a large percentage of students：学生のかなりの割合）。increase by 30 percent（30 パーセント増える）と、percentage increase（増加率）を比べると差がわかる。
もう一つ注意したいのが、率の差を言うときの percentage point（パーセントポイント）。5% から 7% への変化は「2 パーセントポイントの上昇」であり「2 パーセントの上昇」ではない。「per centum＝百につき」を出発点に、単位の percent と量の percentage を切り分けて覚えるとよい。
