rationの語源と覚え方
覚え方
rat はラテン語 reor（考える・判断する）で、その名詞 ratiō は「計算・割り当ての筋道」。計算して決めた一人分が、フランス語 ration を経て「配給」になった。
早い者勝ちにせず、足りない物を数えて等しく割るのが核。名詞なら決められた一人分、動詞なら「一定量に絞って配給する」で、戦時の食糧や水のように、限りある物を扱う場面に出てくる。
同じ ratiō から ratio（比）や rational（筋の通った）も出ている。rat- を見たら「計算して割り当てる」。
