ラテン語 per centum（百単位ごと、百あたり）から来た語で、per（〜につき）+ centum（百）という組み合わせ。つまり「百につきどれだけあるか」を表すのが percent である。

100を基準にした割合なので、25 percent は「百のうち25」。per centum＝百あたりと分解すれば、百分率を表す percent の意味をそのまま思い出せる。
