フランス語 plauton から。英語では歩兵の小さな単位、中隊の下に置かれる小隊を指す。ふつう数十人からなり、率いるのは platoon leader。
スポーツでは選手を二組に分けて交代させることを platoon と呼び、野球で投手の左右に応じて打者を使い分ける platoon system が代表例。軍でもスポーツでも、まとまって動く一組を指す点は共通している。映画『プラトーン』の題名もこの語で、ベトナム戦争の一個小隊を描いたもの。
